The Department of English Language and Literature is one of the academic programs within the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Hawassa University. Since its establishment, the department has been committed to excellence in teaching, research, and community service. It provides students with a broad and in-depth understanding of English language, linguistics, literature, and communication skills, preparing graduates to meet both national and international demands. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs that combine theoretical knowledge with practical skills. Students engage with courses in linguistics, applied language studies, literary analysis, and academic writing, alongside opportunities for independent research and applied learning. The programs are designed to cultivate critical thinking, effective communication, and intercultural competence. Graduates of English Language and Literature are well prepared for careers in education, media, publishing, translation, international organizations, and other professional fields that require strong language and analytical skills. In doing so, the department contributes to Ethiopia’s human resource development by producing highly skilled professionals capable of serving their communities and engaging in global discourse. The department of English Language and Literature has the following learning/teaching resources:
English Language Improvement Centre (ELIC): The English Language Improvement Centre serves all Hawassa University students by supporting the development of their English language proficiency. It is equipped with a resourceful library containing a variety of books focused on language improvement. The Centre includes one administrative office and two classrooms dedicated to teaching and learning activities.
English Language Laboratory: The English Language Laboratory is a well-furnished facility designed to support technology-assisted language learning. It accommodates 24 to 30 students and is equipped with 24 desktop computers, enhancing digital learning and helping students practice key language skills, including the use of rising and falling intonations. The lab also includes a separate tape recorder for group listening activities.
Books in the Library: The department has a stock of relevant books available in the huge library of college of social science and Humanities
Internet Access: to encourage students ‘independent learning and provide access to online resources in English language and Literature, additional opportunities need to be created for the students. Thus, adequate access to internet shall be provided

B.A. in English Language and Literature
Graduates of the BA program are equipped with a high level of fluency and accuracy in English across listening, speaking, reading, and writing. They can critically analyze texts and discourse, conduct research, interpret and translate between English and other languages, and write, edit, and review various texts. Graduates are also prepared to use English effectively in professional settings, including writing reports, memos, letters, giving presentations, leading seminars and public discussions, performing literary analysis, and managing public relations tasks with confidence and professionalism.
B.Ed in English Language Teaching
Graduates of the B.Ed program are prepared to teach English at secondary
schools with competence, accuracy, and fluency. They acquire strong pedagogical
skills, enabling them to organise and facilitate discussions and academic
forums, critically engage with literary texts, conduct educational research,
and serve as language specialists (writers, interpreters, or curriculum
consultants). The program balances language proficiency with instructional
methodology to produce well-rounded educators capable of contributing to
Ethiopia’s education system.
M.A. in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL)
Graduates of the MA TEFL program demonstrate advanced knowledge in English language teaching and research. They are prepared to:
- Teach English at high schools, colleges, and universities
- Serve as teacher trainers at teacher education institutions
- Plan curricula and design syllabi
- Produce and evaluate teaching materials for schools and colleges
- Design and evaluate English language tests
- Conduct research in English language teaching and learning
M.A. in Linguistics and Communication
- Linguistics and Multilingualism Track: Graduates can describe and document languages, prepare dictionaries, conduct research on language development programs, plan languages, teach linguistics and multilingualism courses, and provide consultancy on language policy and development.
- Communication and Culture Track: Graduates can teach language and communication courses, provide consultancy on communication and language development, conduct research on communication and culture, & analyse & synthesize diverse discourses.
PhD in English Language Teaching (ELT)
Graduates are able to train English teachers, work as specialists in areas such as syllabus design, teaching material production, classroom management, discourse analysis, and language testing, conduct advanced research in ELT, supervise graduate students, evaluate language programs, and advise policymakers on English language education.
PhD in Applied Linguistics and Communication (AplCo)
Graduates conduct advanced research in language, communication, and culture, interpret and analyze spoken and written texts, teach language, linguistics, and communication at higher education levels, and prepare dictionaries and linguistic resources.
Doctor of Education in English (DEdE)
Graduates are equipped to evaluate programs, curricula, and instructional materials, design and assess tests, train professionals in English education, teach at teacher education colleges, advise and monitor students’ work, support government bodies, and supervise educational institutions to improve English language education.
